Have you ever wondered

what school would be like if learning wasn't a chore?

Open House March 3rd - Register Today

Welcome to One Forest Montessori School! We are an independent school serving families in Waterloo Region, located near King and River Road in the Chicopee area of Kitchener. We are currently enrolling for JK to Grade 6.

At One Forest we believe that learning is natural and it is happening all the time. With that in mind, we have created a unique, flexible learning program that offers a blend of the Montessori, forest school and self-directed learning models. Our spacious classrooms are filled with a variety of hands-on learning materials for children to explore. Smaller class sizes allow children and teachers to make meaningful connections and build a strong community. Our low student-teacher ratio contributes to more personalized learning that targets core skills such as literacy and numeracy.

Freedom To Move Around

Whether it's outdoors in the forest or inside our classroom, our program is designed to accommodate children's natural desire to move. Learning happens where the children are most comfortable; not just at a desk.

Increased Attention

Classrooms have a maximum of 16 children with 2 teachers. We have the time to connect with each child individually and build a close community.

Flexible Learning

At One Forest the children are quite literally surrounded by our curriculum. Our shelves are an ever changing display of enticing hands-on materials that invite exploration. Lessons from the teacher are offered to each child based on their interests and individual learning plan.

Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.

A Passion for Learning

One Forest was created by Danielle Winkel, an experienced Montessori teacher and lifelong learner. Upon completion of her Montessori training, she went on to teach in three different schools in Mississauga, Brampton and Oakville. During the course of working with over 300 children in her 12 years of teaching, Danielle spent countless hours observing and documenting how children learn. Her continued studies in education, psychology and brain plasticity led her to develop a deeper understanding in this area. Armed with this knowledge and experience, she started using these research based methods in her classroom and with her own children.

After moving to Kitchener, she began to search for a school for her son that reflected her educational philosophy. During this process, she was offered the opportunity to collaborate with with an established local business to start her own school. With great excitement, One Forest was born!

Our Values

Curiosity — Children are naturally curious and they want to learn. Our classroom provides a stimulating environment with the flexibility to follow their curiosity.

Connection — Studies show that children learn more from people they have a connection to. We can give your child the time and attention needed to build that connection. Mixed age groups also provide an excellent opportunity for children to learn from one another.

Core Skills — Teachers act as guides, observing how children are developing skills in each area of the curriculum, including the core skills of Math and Language. Lessons from the teacher are offered to each child based on their interests and individual learning plan.

Why Montessori?

How much is the cost of tuition?

The cost of tuition varies depending on the program. We offer full-time, half-day mornings and part-time programs. The cost ranges from $500 to $1,000 per month. Please contact us for a detailed fee schedule.

What are your class sizes?

Classrooms have a maximum of 16 children with two teachers.

Do you follow the Ontario Curriculum?

Our aim is not to use the curriculum as a benchmark but as a roadmap. Our learning space is filled with materials that align with the Ontario Curriculum and immerse children in meaningful learning. The difference lies in how we deliver this curriculum. Our program does not divide learning into subjects and grades. Learning happens on a continuum and children work at their own pace.

Do you offer programs for homeschoolers?

Yes! Our program compliments a variety of homeschooling styles. Homeschoolers are welcome to sign up for full or part-time programs that fit with their schedule.

As a former homeschooling parent myself I found that my son wanted more time with his peers and needed more space for free play and exploration. He wanted to learn skills that I couldn’t teach him but a traditional school environment was not a good fit either.

Our program offers the space and resources that children need to build a community of learners. They will have the freedom to collaborate, problem-solve and learn from one another and from their environment.
